A Standard Test Rod is a 21-inch (53.5cm) low-density plastic wand with an integrated handle at one end and a certified grade 200 precision metal ball visibly enclosed at the sample end. The plastic body is the carrier — the precision ball is the actual test contaminant.

To use it, the operator holds the handle and inserts the sample end through the metal detector aperture. If the system correctly triggers a rejection, the sensitivity check is passed. The 21-inch length keeps the operator's hands outside the detection field throughout the test.

Standard Rods are for large aperture and tunnel-style conveyor detectors — the operator manually passes the rod through the open aperture.

Pipeline Rods are specifically designed for pipeline or gravity-fall systems where product flows through a pipe (liquids, slurries, pumped product). If your detector processes product through a pipe, you need the Pipeline Rod variant.

• Ferrous Chrome (FE) — 52100 steel, 7.80g/cc. Easiest to detect. Most common contamination source.
• Non-Ferrous Brass (NF) — 8.47g/cc. Represents aluminum, copper, and brass contaminants.
• Stainless Steel SS316 — 7.95g/cc. Hardest to detect and the critical audit benchmark.
• Stainless Steel SS304 — 7.95g/cc. Required separately by some HACCP plans.
• Stainless Steel SS440 — 7.70g/cc. Specified by some retailer quality standards.
• Aluminum (AL) — 2.79g/cc. For facilities with foil packaging or aluminum equipment.

Most food safety programs require validation with all three contaminant categories (Fe, NFe, SS). Stainless steel is the performance benchmark — if your system detects SS at the required size, it will detect Fe and NFe at smaller sizes.

The ball diameter should match the minimum detection threshold in your HACCP plan or customer quality requirements. Rods are available from 0.30mm to 5.00mm. To find your required size:
